The Addiction Centre specializes in the assessment and treatment of patients with alcohol and/or other drug abuse/behavioral addictions co-morbid with other psychiatric or physical conditions (“concurrent disorders”).

The Addiction Centre is an assessment treatment, education, evaluation and research facility located at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It operates under the Calgary Health Region Mental Health and Addictions Program within the Acute Care Sector and is also affiliated with the University of Calgary. The Addiction Centre was established in 1993 to serve as a concurrent disorders resource for the people of Alberta. It is staffed by a multidisciplinary team consisting of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, family physicians, nurses and occupational therapists.

A referral from a physician or community agency through a physician is required for treatment and the patient’s family physician is expected to be actively involved. The Addiction Centre is also active in research and education. Students of nursing, social work, psychology, medicine and occupational therapy receive clinical training at the Addiction Centre. Researchers at the Addiction Centre have an extensive publication record and are recognized nationally and internationally.

The current research program is investigating gambling, substance abuse and co-morbid conditions as well as other addictions. It also coordinates the activities of the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM).
